According to Genesis, Noah first sent out a raven after the rain stopped.
Genesis 8 describes Noah waiting as the waters receded. He opened the ark’s window and sent out a raven, which went back and forth until the waters had dried from the earth. Noah then sent a dove to learn whether the surface had become suitable for leaving the ark.
The raven and dove have different roles in the account. The raven is the first bird released, while the dove becomes the better-known messenger because it returns with an olive leaf and is later sent out again. This order is sometimes forgotten when the story is summarized in children’s books or artwork.
The passage does not identify the raven by a personal name. “Raven” is the standard English rendering of the bird named in Genesis 8:7.
