According to Genesis, what did Noah do when God told him to leave the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah came out of the Ark when God told him to leave it.

Genesis 8:15–18 records God speaking to Noah and instructing him to go out of the Ark with his wife, his sons, and his sons’ wives. The command also includes the animals, which are told to leave and multiply on the earth. Noah then exits with his family and the animals.

This detail matters because Genesis does not present Noah as deciding independently that the journey was over. Earlier, Noah entered the Ark in response to divine instruction, and later he waits through the receding waters until another command tells him to leave.

The account gives several earlier signs that the waters are declining, including the raven, the dove, and the visibility of mountain tops. Even so, the narrative places Noah’s actual departure after the direct instruction. The next event Genesis records is Noah’s altar.
