According to Genesis, what did Noah do after leaving the Ark that involved an altar?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah offered burnt offerings after leaving the Ark.

Genesis 8:20 says Noah built an altar to the Lord and took some clean animals and clean birds to offer burnt offerings. This is the first altar explicitly mentioned in the Genesis Flood narrative and marks Noah’s response after the waters had receded and the family had entered the renewed world.

The account links the offering to the earlier distinction between clean and unclean animals. Genesis 7:2 had instructed Noah to take extra clean animals, and Genesis 8:20 explains why that distinction mattered within the story.

The next verse describes God’s response and leads into the covenant in Genesis 9, whose sign is the rainbow. Noah later plants a vineyard and drinks wine, but that episode comes after the altar and offering, so it is not the immediate action described here.
