According to Genesis, a dove returned to Noah carrying an olive leaf.
After the floodwaters began to recede, Genesis 8 describes Noah sending birds from the ark to test whether the ground had become visible. He first sent a raven. Later, he sent a dove, which returned because it found no resting place. Noah sent the dove again seven days later, and it came back in the evening with a freshly plucked olive leaf.
A final release of the dove showed that it did not return, indicating that the waters had receded sufficiently for the land to support life. The olive leaf therefore functions as a concrete sign within the narrative that dry ground was returning.
The raven and dove are both part of the account, but only the dove is described as bringing back an olive leaf. The episode later helped make a dove with an olive branch a widely recognized symbol of peace.
