According to Genesis, on which day of the month did Noah’s Ark come to rest?
Answer
The seventeenth day
Answer
The seventeenth day
According to Genesis, the Ark came to rest on the seventeenth day of the month.
Genesis 8:4 says that the Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month. The statement gives a date within the story’s calendar, but it does not identify one specific peak called Mount Ararat. That distinction matters because later traditions often turn the plural “mountains of Ararat” into a single mountain location.
The verse comes after Genesis says that God caused a wind to pass over the earth and that the floodwaters began to subside. The Ark’s resting is therefore an intermediate point in the narrative, not the moment when Noah and the animals immediately leave.
Genesis continues with a long waiting period. Noah later observes that mountain tops became visible, sends out birds, and finally leaves the Ark only after receiving God’s instruction. The seventeenth-day date should not be confused with the later dates in the Flood chronology.
