According to Genesis, on which day did the Ark come to rest in the mountains of Ararat?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Ark came to rest in the mountains of Ararat on the 17th day of the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 gives this date after describing the Flood waters gradually receding. The wording is “mountains of Ararat,” not necessarily the single modern peak called Mount Ararat. Ararat is associated with an ancient region in eastern Anatolia and the South Caucasus.

The passage uses a month-and-day calendar rather than a modern named-month system. That means the date cannot be translated into a universally agreed Gregorian date. Genesis later records additional milestones, including the appearance of mountain tops and Noah’s release of birds.

A frequent mistake is to answer only “Mount Ararat.” The biblical wording identifies a mountain region, while later tradition and popular culture often focus on the prominent volcanic peak in present-day Turkey.
