According to Genesis, on what day of Noah’s 601st year did he leave the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah left the Ark on the 27th day of the second month of his 601st year.

Genesis 8:13–14 says that the earth was dry by the first day of the first month of Noah’s 601st year, but Noah removed the covering only on that day. The ground was fully dry on the 27th day of the second month, and God then told Noah to leave the Ark. The precise date is one of the narrative’s chronological markers.

This date differs from the Ark’s earlier resting date, which Genesis gives as the seventeenth day of the seventh month. It also differs from the date when Noah first saw the mountain tops. These separate dates explain why the Flood account cannot be reduced to one short rainfall period.
