According to Genesis, on what date did Noah’s Ark rest on the mountains of Ararat?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark rested on the mountains of Ararat on the seventeenth day of the seventh month.

Genesis 8:4 gives this date after describing the Flood waters subsiding. The verse is unusually specific, but the biblical calendar system is not identical to the modern Gregorian calendar. Consequently, the text supplies a relative ancient date rather than a directly convertible modern calendar date.

The passage later records other milestones: the mountain tops became visible in the tenth month, and Noah eventually removed the covering of the Ark in the six hundred and first year of his life. These details show that the landing of the Ark and the final departure from it were separated by additional waiting.

The date is sometimes confused with the date of the Flood’s beginning, which Genesis places in the second month of Noah’s six hundredth year. The seventeenth day of the seventh month specifically marks the Ark’s resting place.
