According to Genesis, in whose six-hundredth year did the Flood begin?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Flood began in Noah's six-hundredth year. Genesis 7:6 states that Noah was 600 years old when the Flood waters came upon the earth.

The account gives additional chronological markers. Genesis 7:11 places the beginning on the seventeenth day of the second month of Noah's six-hundredth year. Later, Genesis 8:13 says that in Noah's 601st year the ground was dry, providing another point in the narrative's timeline.

This age reference is distinct from the ages of Noah's sons, who are named elsewhere in Genesis. It also should not be confused with the length of the Flood, the forty days of rain, or the 150 days during which the waters prevailed. The figure belongs to the chronology of the Genesis narrative, not to an independently dated historical calendar.
