According to Genesis, in which year of Noah’s life did the Flood waters dry up?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Flood waters had dried up in Noah’s 601st year. Genesis 8:13 says that on the first day of the first month of Noah’s 601st year, he removed the covering of the Ark and saw that the ground was dry.

The chapter gives a chronology using Noah’s age and calendar dates. It later says that on the twenty-seventh day of the second month, the earth was dry and God told Noah to leave the Ark. Thus, the animals and Noah’s family remained aboard beyond the first observation of dry ground.

Genesis 7:11 dates the beginning of the Flood to Noah’s 600th year, on the seventeenth day of the second month. The narrative therefore spans the transition from his 600th year into his 601st.

The answer is not simply “one year,” because the text supplies specific dates and distinguishes seeing dry ground from receiving the command to disembark.
