According to Genesis, how old is Noah when the Flood comes upon the earth?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah is 600 years old when the Flood comes upon the earth.

Genesis 7:6 gives Noah’s age at the beginning of the Flood. The narrative also identifies him as the father of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, who enter the Ark with their wives. Noah’s age belongs to the genealogical and chronological framework of Genesis, where exceptionally long lifespans are assigned to several early patriarchs.

The number is sometimes confused with Noah’s total lifespan. Genesis 9:29 says Noah dies at 950 years old, so 600 is his age at the Flood rather than the length of his life. It is also distinct from the 40 days of rain mentioned in the account. Keeping those separate prevents the common mistake of treating all of the narrative’s numbers as the same kind of time measurement.
