According to Genesis, how many years old is Noah when the Flood begins?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah is 600 years old when the Flood begins.

Genesis 7:6 states that Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came upon the earth. This age is part of the narrative’s detailed chronology and is distinct from Noah’s age when his sons were born or his total lifespan.

Genesis first presents Noah’s three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and later gives the Flood date in relation to Noah’s age. The text then records further dates for the waters’ rise and retreat, creating a chronological framework around the story.

Noah’s total lifespan is given later as 950 years in Genesis 9:29. That figure should not be confused with the age of 600 at the Flood. The two numbers answer different questions in the biblical genealogy and narrative.
