According to Genesis, eight people from Noah’s household survived the Flood in the Ark. The group consisted of Noah, his wife, his three sons, and his sons’ three wives.
Genesis 7:13 describes Noah entering the Ark with Shem, Ham, Japheth, Noah’s wife, and the wives of his sons. The total is eight people. A later New Testament passage, 1 Peter 3:20, also refers to eight persons being saved through water, reinforcing the traditional count.
The number counts people, not animals or the total number of living creatures aboard. It also does not mean that eight named individuals are all identified individually in Genesis: Noah is named, his sons are named, but the text does not give personal names for Noah’s wife or his daughters-in-law. Later traditions supply names for them, but those names are not provided in the Genesis account.
