According to Genesis, how many human passengers were aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, eight human passengers were aboard Noah’s Ark. The group consisted of Noah, his wife, their three sons, and the three sons’ wives.

Genesis 7:7 says Noah entered the ark with his sons, his wife, and his sons’ wives. The New Testament later summarizes the same total in 1 Peter 3:20, referring to “eight souls” being saved through water. The count is therefore based on the named family structure, not on a list of personal names for every passenger.

The three sons are named Shem, Ham, and Japheth in Genesis 5:32 and later genealogical passages. Genesis does not give the names of Noah’s wife or his daughters-in-law. It also does not say that any unrelated human survivors entered the ark.

Some artwork shows large crowds or additional attendants, but those additions are not part of the Genesis account. The biblical number eight refers specifically to the human occupants preserved in the ark.
