According to Genesis, eight human passengers survived the Flood in Noah’s Ark. The group consisted of Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the three sons’ wives.
Genesis 7:13 names Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth entering the Ark, along with Noah’s wife and the wives of his sons. A later New Testament passage, 1 Peter 3:20, explicitly refers to “eight souls” being saved through water. Together, these passages support the conventional count of eight human occupants.
The number refers to people, not the animals aboard the Ark. Genesis separately describes animals entering in pairs and, in another passage, distinguishes clean animals from animals that were not clean. Those differing animal instructions have prompted extensive interpretation, but they do not change the human total. The biblical narrative does not provide personal names for Noah’s wife or his daughters-in-law, although later traditions give them various names.
