According to Genesis, how many human beings survived the flood aboard Noah’s Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, eight human beings survived the flood aboard Noah’s Ark.

Genesis 7:13 identifies Noah, his wife, his three sons, and the wives of his three sons as the people who entered the ark. Counting them gives eight people: Noah and his wife, Shem and his wife, Ham and his wife, and Japheth and his wife.

The number is sometimes confused with the total number of living creatures preserved on the ark, which Genesis discusses separately. It is also distinct from later traditions that expand the story with additional names or genealogical details. The standard Genesis account gives no other human passengers.

This group becomes important in Genesis 9, where Noah’s sons are named and the post-flood human population is presented through their descendants. The eight survivors therefore serve as the entire human starting point for the narrative after the flood.
