According to Genesis, how many cubits wide was Noah’s Ark?
Answer
50 cubits
Answer
50 cubits
According to Genesis, Noah’s Ark was 50 cubits wide.
Genesis 6:15 gives the Ark’s dimensions as 300 cubits in length, 50 cubits in width, and 30 cubits in height. The width is therefore one-sixth of the stated length. These measurements are among the most concrete construction details in the Genesis narrative.
A cubit was an ancient unit commonly related to the length of a forearm, but its exact value varied by time and place. Depending on the cubit used, the Ark’s width is often estimated at roughly 22 to 25 metres, though Genesis itself gives only cubits. The biblical figure should not be silently converted into one exact modern measurement.
The width is sometimes confused with the Ark’s height because both numbers appear in the same verse. The 30-cubit figure is the height, while 50 cubits is the width and 300 cubits is the length.
