According to Genesis, how long did Noah wait before leaving the Ark?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah remained in the Ark for about one year before leaving it.

Genesis dates the Flood using Noah's age and a sequence of calendar days. Noah entered the ark in the second month of his 600th year, and Genesis 8:14 says the earth was dry by the 27th day of the second month of his 601st year. That span is commonly summarized as about one year.

The account includes several separate intervals within that year: 40 days of rain, 150 days during which the waters prevailed, the grounding of the ark, the appearance of mountain tops, and the repeated release of birds. These details show why the 40-day rainfall should not be confused with the time spent aboard.

Exact modern conversion depends on how the ancient calendar and the term “month” are interpreted. The safest concise description is approximately one year, while the narrative itself supplies the more precise internal dates.
