According to Genesis, how long did Noah remain inside the Ark before God told him to leave?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, Noah remained inside the Ark for more than a year before God told him to leave. The chronology begins when Noah enters in the six hundredth year of his life and ends when he exits in the six hundred and first year.

Genesis 7:11 dates the Flood’s beginning to the seventeenth day of the second month. Genesis 8:14–16 says the earth was dry by the twenty-seventh day of the second month in Noah’s six hundred and first year, when God commanded the occupants to leave. That interval is a little over a year in the narrative’s calendar.

The forty days of rain are only one part of the account. Waters continue to prevail, recede, and dry afterward, so “forty days” is not the total time Noah spent aboard.

The exact modern length of a biblical month is debated, but the Genesis chronology plainly spans the remainder of one year and part of the next.
