According to Genesis, for how many days did the Flood waters prevail?

The story behind the answer

According to Genesis, the Flood waters prevailed for one hundred and fifty days.

Genesis 7:24 states that the waters prevailed upon the earth for 150 days. This figure follows the forty days and nights of rain but measures a different part of the story: the period during which the waters remained dominant.

The distinction matters because the Flood narrative contains several durations. Rain falls for forty days and nights, the waters prevail for 150 days, and the complete episode—from its beginning until the earth is dry—covers approximately one year in the biblical chronology.

The 150-day figure is also linked to Genesis 8:3, which says the waters began receding after that period. It should not be substituted for the duration of rainfall or for the total time Noah spent aboard the Ark.
