Caroline was the lifelong assistant of Cave Johnson, the founder and chief executive of Aperture Science. As Johnson neared death, he ordered that Caroline become the first test subject for a mind-to-computer transfer. Her human personality was ultimately uploaded into the computer system that became GLaDOS.

Portal 2 reveals this connection through recordings and discoveries in Aperture’s older test facilities. When GLaDOS recognizes that she was originally based on Caroline, the revelation creates an internal conflict between the ruthless artificial intelligence and the human identity embedded in her history.
