In The Lab, which engine powers the Robot Repair minigame?

The story behind the answer

In The Lab, the Robot Repair minigame is powered by Valve’s Source 2 engine. This makes it the exception within the collection, because most of The Lab’s other experiences use Unity.

The Lab was released by Valve for Windows virtual reality in 2016 as a set of short experiments accessed from a Portal-themed hub. Robot Repair places the player inside an Aperture Science testing facility, where GLaDOS instructs them to repair Atlas, the spherical robot from Portal 2. The sequence is structured as an interactive comedy sketch, with scripted events surrounding the repair tasks.

Source 2 was Valve’s successor to the original Source engine. Valve announced it publicly in 2015, and Dota 2 became its first major game after being ported to the new technology. The engine later powered projects including Half-Life: Alyx and Counter-Strike 2.

The common mistake is answering “Source,” which was used by earlier Valve games but is not the engine identified for Robot Repair. Unity remains relevant to The Lab overall, but Robot Repair specifically uses Source 2.
