Whom does Catherine Earnshaw marry in Wuthering Heights?
Answer
Edgar Linton
Answer
Edgar Linton
Catherine Earnshaw marries Edgar Linton in Wuthering Heights.
Catherine and Edgar come from sharply different social worlds. Edgar is the refined, wealthy heir of Thrushcross Grange, while Catherine’s deepest emotional bond is with Heathcliff, the foundling raised at Wuthering Heights. She nevertheless accepts Edgar’s proposal, partly because marrying Heathcliff would lower her social position.
After Heathcliff overhears only part of Catherine’s conversation with Nelly Dean, he leaves Wuthering Heights. During his absence, Catherine marries Edgar and moves to Thrushcross Grange. Their marriage produces a daughter, Catherine Linton, usually called Cathy.
The marriage is often confused with later relationships in the novel. Isabella Linton marries Heathcliff, while Cathy Linton eventually marries Linton Heathcliff and later plans to marry Hareton Earnshaw. Catherine Earnshaw’s husband, however, is Edgar Linton.
