Which Bronte sister wrote the novel 'Villette'?

The story behind the answer

Charlotte Brontë wrote the novel Villette.

Published in 1853, Villette was Charlotte Brontë’s third novel and the last one published during her lifetime. It follows Lucy Snowe, an English woman who travels to the fictional Continental city of Villette and takes work at a girls’ school. The book is known for its psychological intensity, first-person narration, and themes of isolation, faith, independence, and desire.

Charlotte was born in 1816 at Thornton, Yorkshire, and grew up with her sisters Emily and Anne, both major English novelists. The sisters initially published under the shared pseudonym Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Charlotte’s best-known novel, Jane Eyre, appeared in 1847 under the name Currer Bell.

The sisters are easy to confuse because all three wrote important novels. Emily wrote Wuthering Heights, Anne wrote Agnes Grey and The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, while Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre, Shirley, The Professor, and Villette.
