Which village near Bradford was Charlotte Brontë born in?
Answer
Thornton
Answer
Thornton
Charlotte Brontë was born in Thornton, a village near Bradford in Yorkshire.
Her father, Patrick Brontë, became curate of Thornton in 1815, and the family moved into the local parsonage. Charlotte was born there on 21 April 1816, followed by Branwell, Emily and Anne. The house is now known as the Brontë Birthplace.
The family’s strongest literary association is usually with Haworth, where Patrick became perpetual curate in 1820. That move explains a common mix-up: Haworth was the Brontës’ childhood home and the setting most closely linked with their legacy, but it was not Charlotte’s birthplace.
Thornton also matters because it was the birthplace of several Brontë siblings. Charlotte later became the author of Jane Eyre, first published in 1847 under the name Currer Bell.
