Answer
Tim Minchin
Answer
Tim Minchin
Who wrote the music and lyrics for *Groundhog Day* the musical? Tim Minchin wrote both the music and lyrics.
The stage musical adapts the 1993 film *Groundhog Day*, in which television weatherman Phil Connors becomes trapped repeating February 2. Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the film with Harold Ramis, wrote the musical’s book. Director Matthew Warchus brought Rubin and Minchin together after Minchin’s success with *Matilda the Musical*.
The musical premiered at London’s Old Vic in 2016 before transferring to Broadway in 2017. It is sometimes mistakenly credited to Stephen Sondheim because Sondheim once expressed interest in a *Groundhog Day* adaptation, but he did not write this musical. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lin-Manuel Miranda were not its composers.
Minchin’s score combines comic songs with darker, more reflective material, matching the story’s shift from selfishness to personal change. The production reunited much of the creative team behind *Matilda*, including Warchus and choreographer Peter Darling.
