Who directed Groundhog Day the musical's original stage production?
Answer
Matthew Warchus
Answer
Matthew Warchus
Matthew Warchus directed Groundhog Day the musical’s original stage production.
The musical premiered at London’s Old Vic in 2016, with Warchus directing. He was serving as the theatre’s artistic director, and the production formed part of his first season in that role. The show later transferred to Broadway in 2017, retaining Warchus as director.
Groundhog Day was adapted from the 1993 film about television weatherman Phil Connors, who becomes trapped repeating February 2. Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the film’s screenplay, wrote the musical’s book, while Tim Minchin composed the music and lyrics.
Warchus was not the show’s composer or choreographer: Peter Darling handled choreography, with Ellen Kane also credited for co-choreography. Jerry Zaks, Sam Mendes, and Casey Nicholaw are prominent theatre directors, but none directed the original Groundhog Day stage production. The musical won the 2017 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical after its London run.
