Answer
April 17, 2017
Groundhog Day the musical officially opened on Broadway on April 17, 2017.
The Broadway production played at the August Wilson Theatre, with Andy Karl reprising the role of Phil Connors. The musical has music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Danny Rubin, who also created the original film’s story. Matthew Warchus directed the stage production, reuniting much of the creative team associated with Matilda.
April 17 was the official opening night, not the first preview. The production’s first scheduled preview took place on March 16, but technical problems with the revolving stage forced the performance to continue in a makeshift concert format after about 15 minutes. The show had already premiered in London at the Old Vic on August 16, 2016.
The Broadway run closed on September 17, 2017, after 176 performances and 32 previews. Karl also suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during a preview shortly before opening, yet returned for opening night. The musical received seven Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, while its London production won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
