Who wrote the 1865 novel Alice's Adventures in Wonderland?
Answer
Lewis Carroll
Answer
Lewis Carroll
Lewis Carroll wrote Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, first published in 1865. Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, an English mathematician, logician, photographer, and author who taught at Christ Church, Oxford.
The story grew from a tale Dodgson told to three sisters, including Alice Liddell, during a boating trip on the River Thames in 1862. Alice reportedly asked him to write the story down. Dodgson developed the manuscript into a book, and illustrator John Tenniel created the famous original illustrations.
The novel follows Alice after she falls down a rabbit hole into a world governed by strange transformations, wordplay, and unstable rules. Characters such as the White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, and Queen of Hearts helped make the book a lasting part of popular culture.
The title is often shortened to Alice in Wonderland, but Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is the book’s original title. It is also frequently confused with Through the Looking-Glass, Carroll’s 1871 sequel, which features a different chess-themed journey.
