The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is in which country?
Answer
Ukraine
Answer
Ukraine
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is in Ukraine.
The plant is located near the abandoned city of Pripyat in northern Ukraine, close to the border with Belarus. On 26 April 1986, reactor 4 suffered a catastrophic explosion during a low-power test. The accident released radioactive material across parts of Europe and became the worst nuclear power accident in history by its scale and effects.
At the time of the accident, Ukraine was one of the republics of the Soviet Union. This historical context explains why older references may describe Chernobyl as being in the USSR rather than using the modern country name. Ukraine became independent in 1991 after the Soviet Union dissolved.
The damaged reactor was enclosed in a temporary shelter soon after the accident. A larger New Safe Confinement structure was moved into place in 2016 to help contain radioactive remains. The plant’s last operating reactor was shut down in 2000, but decommissioning and radioactive-waste management continue.
