Which body of water separates Asia from North America at its narrowest point?

The story behind the answer

The Bering Strait separates Asia from North America at its narrowest point.

The strait lies between Russia's Chukchi Peninsula and Alaska's Seward Peninsula. At its narrowest, the two continents are roughly 85 kilometres apart, although the Diomede Islands sit between them in the middle of the passage.

The Bering Strait connects the Arctic Ocean's Chukchi Sea with the Pacific Ocean's Bering Sea. The United States–Russia maritime boundary runs through the region, and the International Date Line passes between the two Diomede Islands.

During ice ages, falling sea levels exposed Beringia, a broad land bridge linking Siberia and Alaska. Archaeological and genetic evidence connects this region with the movement of ancestral peoples into the Americas, although the timing and routes remain subjects of research.
