Which Nobel Prize did Marie Curie win in 1911?
Answer
Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Answer
Nobel Prize in Chemistry
Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911.
The Swedish Academy awarded Curie the 1911 Chemistry Nobel for discovering the elements polonium and radium, studying their properties, and isolating radium. She had already shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre Curie and Henri Becquerel for work on radiation.
Curie became the first person to receive two Nobel Prizes. She also remains the only individual to win Nobel Prizes in two different scientific fields. Her 1911 award recognised chemistry specifically, not the physics research that had earned her first Nobel.
Curie named polonium after her native Poland. During the First World War, she promoted mobile X-ray units, known as “Little Curies,” to help doctors treat wounded soldiers. Long-term exposure to radiation damaged her health, and she died in 1934.
