Who wrote 'Animal Farm'?

The story behind the answer

Who wrote “Animal Farm”? George Orwell wrote it. The book is a satirical allegorical novella, first published in England on 17 August 1945 by Secker and Warburg. Its full original title was “Animal Farm: A Fairy Story.”

Orwell uses a rebellion by farm animals to examine how political ideals can be corrupted by propaganda, privilege, and authoritarian power. The plot broadly reflects the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism, though the book works more widely as a warning about totalitarian politics.

A common mix-up is calling Animal Farm a conventional novel or a children’s story. It is often shelved with novels, but Orwell described it as a political fable and satire. Its best-known companion in Orwell’s work is Nineteen Eighty-Four, published in 1949, which explores surveillance and totalitarian control in a different form.
