In Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Dispossessed,” the anarchist moon is Anarres.
Anarres is the drier, poorer twin world of Urras in the Tau Ceti system. It was settled by Odonian revolutionaries who left Urras after a social and political struggle. Their society rejects conventional state authority, private property, and money, aiming instead for mutual aid and voluntary cooperation.
The novel’s setting is deliberately complicated. Anarres presents itself as a free society, yet social pressure and scarcity can restrict individual choices almost as strongly as formal laws. Its inhabitants call themselves Anarresti, while their philosophy is associated with Odonism and anarcho-syndicalism.
A common mix-up is reversing Anarres and Urras. Urras is the lush, materially richer world divided among competing states; Anarres is the arid moon shaped by the anarchist experiment. Shevek, the novel’s physicist protagonist, travels between them, exposing the strengths and contradictions of both societies.
