Who won the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in 2017?

The story behind the answer

Justin Rose won the World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions in 2017.

The tournament was played from October 26–29 at Sheshan Golf Club in Shanghai, China. Rose finished at 14 under par with a four-round total of 274, earning his first HSBC Champions title and his second World Golf Championship victory. The event was the ninth edition of the WGC-HSBC Champions and featured a 78-player field with no cut.

Rose’s victory was especially dramatic because he began the final round eight strokes behind third-round leader Dustin Johnson. He shot a 5-under-par 67 on Sunday, while Johnson struggled to a 5-over 77 in windy conditions. Rose ultimately won by two strokes, finishing ahead of Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Henrik Stenson, who tied for second at 12 under.

A common mix-up is confusing the 2017 champion with Hideki Matsuyama, who won the previous edition in 2016, or with Xander Schauffele, who captured the tournament in 2018. Rose’s 2017 win was also his eighth PGA Tour title at the time, adding a major comeback to his already distinguished career.
