Who won the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry?

Stewart Cink won the 2009 Open Championship at Turnberry in Scotland.

Cink defeated five-time Open champion Tom Watson in a four-hole playoff after both players finished the regulation 72 holes at 2-under-par. Cink’s final-round 69 secured his place in the playoff, while Watson became the oldest player to contend seriously for the title at age 59.

The championship was Cink’s first major victory and his sixth win on the PGA Tour. In the playoff, Cink made two birdies and finished three strokes ahead of Watson. The result was especially memorable because Watson had led for much of the tournament and needed only a par at the 72nd hole to win outright.

Turnberry’s Ailsa Course hosted the Open for the fourth time in 2009. The course is famous for its coastal setting and the iconic lighthouse beside the 9th green. The event is sometimes remembered primarily for Watson’s remarkable challenge, but the official champion was Cink.
