Golf first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900.
The tournaments were held during the 1900 Summer Olympics in Paris, France. Golf was played at the Compiègne Club, where both men's and women's individual stroke-play competitions took place. The men's event covered 36 holes, while the women's event covered nine holes.
Golf was also included at the 1904 Summer Olympics in St. Louis, but it then disappeared from the Olympic programme for more than a century. A planned 1908 Olympic golf tournament was cancelled after a dispute led British golfers to withdraw.
The sport returned at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. Although golf had earlier Olympic appearances, the modern competitions use a different format, with 72-hole individual stroke play for both men and women.
