Marielle Thompson
Answer
Marielle Thompson
Marielle Thompson won the women’s ski cross gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
The Canadian finished first in the final at the Rosa Khutor Extreme Park. Sweden’s Anna Holmlund took silver, while Switzerland’s Fanny Smith won bronze.
Ski cross is a freestyle skiing race in which competitors start together on a course containing rollers, jumps, berms and turns. Unlike many alpine events, it is decided directly by finishing order rather than by adding times from separate runs.
Thompson had already won a World Cup ski cross event before Sochi and entered the Olympic final as one of the leading competitors. Her victory gave Canada another gold medal in a discipline that had become an Olympic medal event at Vancouver in 2010.
