Who won the men’s ski jumping normal-hill gold medal at Sochi 2014?

The story behind the answer

Kamil Stoch won the men’s ski jumping normal-hill gold medal at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics.

Representing Poland, Stoch led the competition after both rounds at the RusSki Gorki Jumping Center. He recorded jumps of 105.5 and 103.5 metres and finished ahead of Slovenia’s Peter Prevc and Norway’s Anders Bardal.

The normal hill is smaller than the large hill and rewards a combination of take-off power, flight control and landing technique. Ski jumpers receive points for distance and style, with wind and starting-gate factors also used in modern scoring.

Stoch went on to win the large-hill event at Sochi as well. His double made him the first Polish athlete to win two gold medals at a single Winter Olympics and confirmed his status as one of the era’s leading jumpers.
