Which country won the first Olympic ski jumping team gold medal at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics?

The story behind the answer

Finland won the first Olympic ski jumping team gold medal at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.

The Finnish team won the inaugural Olympic team event on the large hill at Canada Olympic Park. Finland finished ahead of Yugoslavia, which won silver, and Norway, which took bronze. The event used results from four jumpers, with the teams’ scores combined.

Team ski jumping had appeared at world championship level before 1988, but Calgary was the first Winter Olympics to award an Olympic medal in the team format. Its inclusion expanded ski jumping beyond the established individual normal-hill and large-hill competitions.

Finland’s victory reflected the country’s deep ski-jumping tradition. Finnish jumpers had already won numerous Olympic individual medals, and the team competition rewarded national depth as well as one star performer. The event remains part of the Olympic ski-jumping programme, although formats and hill specifications have evolved.
