Who won the men's singles at the 2024 Australian Open?

The story behind the answer

Jannik Sinner won the men's singles title at the 2024 Australian Open. The fourth-seeded Italian defeated third-seeded Daniil Medvedev in a five-set final, winning 3–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–4, 6–3 on 28 January 2024.

The victory was Sinner's first Grand Slam singles title. He became the second Italian man in the Open Era to win a major singles championship, following Adriano Panatta's 1976 French Open triumph. Sinner also became the first new Australian Open men's champion since Stan Wawrinka won in 2014.

The final became memorable because Sinner recovered from two sets down. Medvedev had led comfortably before Sinner changed the match's momentum and won the last three sets. Earlier in the tournament, Sinner had defeated defending champion Novak Djokovic in the semifinals, ending Djokovic's 33-match Australian Open winning streak. The 2024 final was also the first Australian Open men's singles final since 2005 without a member of tennis's Big Three.
