Which Sydney venue hosted the 1970 Australian Open?

The story behind the answer

White City Stadium hosted the 1970 Australian Open in Sydney.

The tournament was played on grass from 19 to 27 January 1970 at the White City tennis complex in Rushcutters Bay. It was the 58th edition of the Australian Championships, as the event was then commonly known, and the 16th edition held in Sydney.

Margaret Court won the women’s singles without dropping a set, defeating Kerry Melville 6–1, 6–3. Arthur Ashe captured the men’s singles title by beating Dick Crealy 6–4, 9–7, 6–2. The tournament’s men’s field was weakened because several leading professionals were unavailable after joining the National Tennis League.

White City was a major Australian tennis venue before the Australian Open settled permanently at Melbourne Park. It also hosted important Davis Cup ties and other Sydney tournaments. A common mix-up is Milton Courts, which hosted some earlier Australian Championships, while Memorial Drive Park was the Adelaide venue for other editions.
