Who won the men’s downhill at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics?
Answer
Pirmin Zurbriggen
Answer
Pirmin Zurbriggen
Pirmin Zurbriggen won the men’s downhill at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics.
The Swiss skier completed the race in 1 minute 59.63 seconds, taking gold on the Olympic downhill course at Nakiska. Peter Müller, also representing Switzerland, won silver, while France’s Franck Piccard took bronze.
Zurbriggen was one of the leading alpine racers of the 1980s. Before Calgary, he had already won world titles and World Cup races in several disciplines, including downhill and giant slalom. His Calgary victory was his only Olympic gold medal.
The result is sometimes confused with Zurbriggen’s 1988 Olympic silver medal in the combined event. The men’s downhill was a separate race, decided by a single timed run, whereas the combined event used downhill and slalom results.
