Edge won the first WWE Money in the Bank ladder match at WrestleMania 21.
The match took place on April 3, 2005, at Staples Center in Los Angeles. Edge defeated Chris Jericho, Christian, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin and Kane by retrieving the briefcase suspended above the ring.
The briefcase originally guaranteed the winner a contract for a future world championship match. Edge later used the contract at New Year’s Revolution in January 2006, attacking John Cena after Cena had defended the WWE Championship in an Elimination Chamber match.
Money in the Bank became an annual WrestleMania tradition before receiving its own WWE pay-per-view in 2010. The match is often associated with surprise cash-ins, although the contract’s exact rules and expiration period have changed in different eras.
