Who won the first season of the UK reality dance competition 'Strictly Come Dancing'?

The story behind the answer

Natasha Kaplinsky won the first season of the UK reality dance competition Strictly Come Dancing.

Kaplinsky competed with professional dancer Brendan Cole in the inaugural 2004 series. The BBC program paired celebrities with professional ballroom dancers and combined judges' scores with public voting. Kaplinsky and Cole won the final against Christopher Parker and Hanna Karttunen.

The couple's victory established the central format that later seasons retained: celebrity contestants learn ballroom and Latin routines, perform weekly, and face elimination based on judges and viewers. The show became one of the BBC's flagship entertainment programs.

Strictly Come Dancing is the British version of the international format known as Dancing with the Stars in many countries. Although the programs share the same basic structure, their hosts, judges and celebrity lineups differ by territory.
