Who won the first Masters Tournament in 1934?
Answer
Horton Smith
Answer
Horton Smith
Horton Smith won the first Masters Tournament in 1934.
The inaugural event was held from March 22 to 25 at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It was not yet officially called the Masters; its formal name was the Augusta National Invitation Tournament, although “the Masters” was used informally from the beginning.
Smith finished four rounds at 284, four under par, and won by one stroke over Craig Wood. His winning birdie putt came at the 17th hole, which is now the eighth because Augusta National later reversed its nines. Smith’s prize was $1,500 from a total purse of $5,000.
The tournament also marked Bobby Jones’s return from competitive retirement. Because Augusta National was financially struggling, members personally helped fund the prize money. A frequent mistake is identifying Gene Sarazen or Craig Wood as the first champion: both were prominent players, but Smith is the official inaugural winner.
