Ben Kingsley won the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing Mahatma Gandhi in Gandhi.
Richard Attenborough directed the 1982 historical war film, which covers Gandhi’s life from his early work in South Africa through India’s independence movement and his assassination in 1948. Kingsley, whose father was of Gujarati Indian descent, was praised for his physical resemblance and detailed performance.
The film presents Gandhi’s commitment to nonviolent resistance against British rule, including the Salt March and the campaign of civil disobedience. It also depicts the violence surrounding the Partition of India and the political tensions involving the Indian National Congress, the Muslim League, and British authorities.
Gandhi won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Original Screenplay. Attenborough spent many years developing the project, and the production used large-scale locations and crowds to recreate major public events. The film is a dramatized biography, so it condenses chronology while retaining the central historical episodes.
