In Full Metal Jacket, what nickname is given to Leonard Lawrence during Marine boot camp?

The story behind the answer

In Full Metal Jacket, Leonard Lawrence is given the nickname “Gomer Pyle” during Marine boot camp.

The nickname comes from the character Gomer Pyle in the American television sitcom The Andy Griffith Show. In the film, the overweight and initially struggling recruit is mocked by his fellow Marines and assigned the name by Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, played by R. Lee Ermey.

Leonard’s difficulties with discipline, marching, rifle training, and military routines make him a target for Hartman’s increasingly harsh treatment. Private Joker and the other recruits also participate in the pressure placed on him, creating one of the film’s central portrayals of military dehumanization and group conformity.

“Gomer Pyle” is Leonard’s boot-camp nickname, not his actual name or rank. The character is also commonly confused with Private Joker, the film’s narrator and principal viewpoint character, who is played by Matthew Modine. Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 film adapts the first half of Gustav Hasford’s 1979 novel The Short-Timers, although it adds Vietnam combat material in its second half.
