Oliver Stone’s Platoon won four Academy Awards at the 1987 ceremony.
The awards were Best Picture, Best Director for Stone, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound. The film is set during the Vietnam War and follows Chris Taylor, a young American infantryman whose unit is divided by conflicting ideas about morality, leadership, and combat.
Platoon was released in 1986 and drew on Stone’s own experience as a U.S. Army infantry soldier in Vietnam. Its success helped establish the Vietnam War film as a major Hollywood subject and contrasted with earlier movies that often treated the war through a more detached or action-focused lens. It is sometimes confused with Full Metal Jacket, another major Vietnam War film, but the two were directed by different filmmakers and tell very different stories.
