Who won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature?

The story behind the answer

Jon Fosse won the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature.

The Swedish Academy cited Fosse for his innovative plays and prose, which give voice to the unsayable. The Norwegian writer is known for novels, poetry, essays, and drama, often using repetition, pauses, and sparse language to explore silence, faith, and human connection.

Fosse writes in Nynorsk, one of Norway’s two official written standards. His dramatic works have been staged internationally, while Septology became one of his most widely discussed later achievements.

Fosse’s award followed Annie Ernaux’s 2022 Nobel and preceded Han Kang’s 2024 Nobel. A frequent mix-up is to identify Fosse as a Swedish or Danish writer; he is Norwegian and has long been associated with Norway’s literary culture.
